The pain we feel may be unpleasant, but it draws our attention to the situation that is causing us distress. Without adversity there would be no personal growth. They create opportunities to go inward to better understand ourselves.

Trauma

Trauma leaves its imprint within our subconscious. Our brain replays the traumatic event like on a loop. It is very difficult to get the memory out of our brains. The negative thoughts and emotions seem stuck which can cause nightmares, flashbacks, fear (anxiety), anger, sadness and feelings of numbness. Often traumas can cause post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Sometimes the fear may subside but when something triggers us, the trauma resurfaces, and intense fear returns. Trauma can manifest days, months or even years after the actual event. People often have panic attacks, feeling intense fear without the presence of an actual danger. They experience dizziness, nausea and trembling. They may feel disconnected and unable to trust other people. It is difficult to feel safe again.

The reality of cravings for someone who suffers from an addiction aren’t the same kind of cravings that someone would have for chocolate. An addict doesn’t just crave the drug; their body is functioning as if it cannot live without it. The substance becomes master of their mind and body. Without the drug they become irritable, anxious, jittery, feeling incredible pain, etc. People who have an addiction feel an internal chaos going on created by emotions they misunderstand. They often feel feelings of shame, helplessness, sadness fear and guilty. They feel empty inside and use drugs to fill the void.

Imagine feeling extremely happy (could be for few seconds, minutes, hours or days) and then that happiness will be replaced with complete sadness wanting to die. Your emotions behave in extremes. That’s how it feels to suffer from bi-polar. Everyone experiences it differently by it feels like a fight within ones-self.

Borderline personality disorder feels like your relationships are impossible. Your brain never stops running and your stress is magnified. It’s difficult to distinguish who you actually are. It’s like ‘chronic irrationality’. Think severe mood swings, impulsivity, instability, and a whole lot of explosive anger. It’s difficult to regulate your emotions and thoughts. You feel empty and have tendencies to self-harm.
